The content and style of my performances are based on the themes and iconography
of all the mayor religions. The final performance could be characterized as an
abstract, a cross-religious sermon. I was raised in a Christian religious village
in the North of Holland. From this background I was able to develop a self-willed vision and framework on religion as a source of themes, stories and iconography.
What fascinates me deeply are the paintings originating from the early Renaissance,
for example the works of: Fra Filipo Lippi and Fra Angelico, but also Jean Fouqet and
Sandro Botticelli. The religiosity and the symbolic content of these works are often
referred to in my performances/installations. In my use of visual deformations, the
resulting images bear some resemblance to the abstract patterns of Islamic art and
the richly colored imagery of Hindu art. That’s what makes my performances both
cross religious as cross medial.
